Running Your Race

by frazzledmama on June 1, 2011

This morning I was listening to Beth Moore teach and she read this passage from Hebrews 12:1-3

1 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  3 For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls. 4 You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin.

You know what stuck out to me from these verses?

“Let us run the race that is set before us.”

Here’s the thing, the last two years have been….how do I put this without offending anyone….ummm…..Heck on wheels (doesn’t have the same ring does it?)  Well, you get the gist.  It has been rough, physically, emotionally, financially, you name it!  I am tired, and I keep reminding the Lord that He is supposed to remember that I am dust(Psalm 103:14).

The most recent area in my life that is under attack from the “blahs” is our homeschool program.  Please don’t tell my kiddos this,  but I dread doing school every day.  This is not normal for me,  I love school, and learning, and teaching.  But….I’m tired.

Then the next wave of attack comes, “Am I doing enough?  Are they behind?  Should I be teaching them organic chemistry already?”  Yes, I know people…many of you have come to me for homeschool advice, and I have even evaluated some of your children.  But, just like you, I have doubts, concerns, and insecurities about my homeschool program.

Just keepin’ it real. :)

So, those words stuck out to me big time today, but I personalized it a bit, “the race set before me.”  Right now, the race set before me (by the Lord) is to be here doing the best I can to instruct, mentor and encourage my children on the path that the Lord has set before them.   Just as my race is different from yours, so my children’s race is different from mine.  I needed that reminder today that I am equipping them for their race, not mine, not Mr. OverKill’s, not yours, and certainly not Super Mom’s kiddos*.  I have done my part in prayerfully considering what I need to do to instruct and equip my children for their race. Now, I need to relax and prayerfully trust the Lord to work out His perfect plan for their race.  In His word, I find this encouragement…

And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. -2 Corinthians 12:9

And those who know Your name will put their trust in You;
For You, LORD, have not forsaken those who seek You.
-Psalm 9:10

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. – Isaiah 40:29

In the day that I called, you answered me. You encouraged me with the strength in my soul. –Psalm 138:8

The Lord is my helper.  I will not fear.  What can man do to me? – Hebrews 13:6

My last encouragement for the day comes from C.S. Lewis, in Mere Christianity,

“Keep nothing back. Nothing that you have not given away will be really yours. Nothing in you that has not died will ever be raised from the dead. Look for yourself, and you will find in the long run only hatred, loneliness, despair, rage, ruin, and decay. But look for Christ and you will find Him, and with Him everything else thrown in.”

*Super Mom does not exists and neither do her children ;)
