Garden Update, part 4

by frazzledmama on September 17, 2009

Ok, so back in part 1 I mentioned about a new way to grow my squash.  I have recently become totally enamored with squash and zucchini.  I’ve hated zucchini my whole life, and squash was kind of a take it or leave it veggie for me.  But, as I have been going through these physical trials and changes, I discovered I like zucchini now.  I also like coleslaw.  Weird, I know!

Back to my squash.  Last year, I grew them off a trellis out of the culvert pipe, remember?

Sadly, those squash plants died, and I just didn’t feel like messing with it anymore.  But this year, I wanted to have a good way to grow them, and an easy way to harvest.  So, I started thinking, and this is what I came up with…

Basically, I built a box out of pressure treated 2×4’s to set a clear boundary, so my yard man wouldn’t accidentally run over my plants :)

Then, we killed all the grass inside the box, and I pulled up the dead grass around the two ends. I also added my standard ingredients to the soil. Next, I used two pieces of our old dog run fencing.  We don’t have to keep Bo pent up, so these were just laying around, useless.  So, I put them to use, as a trellis, a free trellis, a trellis that won’t rot.

All I needed now was some plants!  Which I had already started, and boy were they ready to get out of those little cramped spaces.

I think I will have enough squash….maybe :)
